Group Classes
How many times have you heard, “I took my dog to group classes, but he or she flunked.”
When Alternative Canine Training was asked to set up group classes for All American Pet Resort Lakeshore in St. Clair Shores this was one statement we wanted to make sure we wouldn’t hear from owners.
Each class is small allowing for individual attention from two trainers. Plus you learn the same techniques that made Alternative Canine Training so successful. All forms of behavioral problems, except aggression, are also addressed. A Lifetime Guarantee ensures that if you complete a class and experience problems in the future you can return to that class as many times as needed free of charge.

Puppy Pre-School
For puppies 10 weeks to 5 months
There are several critical developmental stages that your puppy goes through. This is why it is so important to socialize and train your puppy. It was always thought you had to wait until a puppy was 6 months old to start training, because most training methods were too harsh. With our puppy training you can start the minute you bring the new puppy home. It is actually preferred and probably the best training method for your new puppy. Our puppy pre-school and techniques are tailored for puppies of all breeds and sizes. The training is positive motivational training and you will also learn how the mother dog communicates with her puppies using “Doglish.” Most important you learn how to prevent behavior problems.
In 5 weeks / 5 lessons your puppy will quickly learn:
- To stop: chewing, jumping and nipping
- Housebreaking
- How to love being touched and groomed
- Walking without pulling
- Sit and sit stay
- Down and down stay
- Come on first command
- To accept authority in the home
- To socialize and play games

Doggy School (Basics)
For dogs 4-1/2 months and older
Is your 4-1/2 months old puppy starting to challenge you? Not surprising. Your puppy has turned into a teenager. It’s time for your dog to start Junior High and learn how to truly be a wonderful companion. In this class you will learn the techniques and system that made Alternative Canine Training famous. You and your dog are ready to embark on a journey to achieve the highest level of doggy education. We also address all types of behavior problems (except aggression).
In 6 weeks / 6 lessons your dog will learn to obey you in any situation under any circumstance.
Commands learned:
- Home manners
- Walking on a Loose leash without pulling
- Sit and sit stay
- Down and down stay
- Come on first command
- Eliminate: jumping, stealing and chewing

Doggy Graduate School (Advanced)
For dogs with a basic education
Now that your dog does everything perfectly on leash its time to work off leash. Yes, off leash. No we do not use electric collars in this class. You will learn the old fashion European way of training a dog to walk and come off leash. Join today and enjoy this new found freedom.
Our graduate program is 6 weeks / 6 lessons
Commands learned:
- Off leash walking
- Total off leash control from a distance
- Sit and sit stay with distractions
- Down and down stay from a distance and with distractions
- Come on first command from a distance under any circumstance

Lifestyle (Canine Good Citizenship program)
After 5 short weeks your dog will be ready to take the AKC Canine Good Citizen test (CGC). CGC is a certification program that is designed to reward dogs who have good manners at home and in the community. The Canine Good Citizen Program is a two-part program that stresses responsible pet ownership for owners and basic manners for dogs. All dogs who pass the 10-step CGC test receive a certificate from the American Kennel Club.
This 6 week / 6 lesson program. You have 5 weeks of instruction and the CGC test on the 6th week.

Agility (Basic, Intermediate & Advanced)
It is very important to have your dog properly trained, but it’s also important to have fun. Dogs shine on the agility course as they fly over jumps, tackle weave poles, run through tunnels, etc.
Our agility classes are set up to help you and your dog learn the skills needed to be a top contender in agility. The classes are also for people who just want to have fun with their dog. Come join the latest craze and allow your dog to burn off some energy.

Specialty classes (see events)
So you’re hooked and really like training your dog. You are both working as a great team, but want more. Or perhaps you want to just brush up on a few commands or techniques. We offer specialty classes such as Field Trip, Maintenance, Trick, and Rally Obedience. We also offer classes specifically tailored for kids to train the dog.
